Anti- Racism by Jewell and Durand is a short but informative master piece. Reading this book I had instant connection as an Afro- Latina women living in a world that is depicted by upper class white cis-gender males. While, reading the book I felt vulnerable in a way. A stranger could be able to describe the feelings I couldn't form into words. I found it to also be eye opening, a realization that I am not the only person who can feel these emotions or be placed in the 'subordinate' box. The content was refreshing, I can't say new or exactly familiar since I learned of some new terms to describe who I am. Above is Kat Graham, she's a black women who has been in the industry for a long time. I've always looked up to her as one of my favorite characters in the Tv series, ' Vampire Diaries'. But since her depature of the show, I have a new found respect for Kat. During the Tv series she spent ever episode wearing a pin straight brown hair wig. But since leaving the show and finding out who she is, she has tried braids, leaving her natural curls, ponytails, and much more. Kat is becoming more than what society says she should be, I feel connected to Kat and to the book, "Anti- Racism"
I love how you describe the emotional nuances of this text! Powerful for such a short piece, right?
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing reflection. I found it infuriating that the director forced her to wear wigs instead of her natural hair.
